Summer Makeup Ideas – Moving at the speed of gossip

It’s hard enough to recognize a trend in makeup let alone confirm its staying power as once upon a time the fashion magazines like Vogue and Elle were the Bibles of confirmation only to be replaced by Instagram, Snapchat, and Pinterest. The problem there is what’s posted today is buried under 5 pages of scrolling down next week, and a long lived trend is a month at best. As Allure so eloquently put it “A trend that debuted at spring fashion shows in September can’t possibly stay in our collective consciousness until April or May.” Despite these obstacles we’re going to give you our ideas for what would be considered the closest thing to a summer trend, and follow up weekly to keep you ahead of the most trending Gram and Pinterest pages.

We start off with Cleopatra Eyelinercleopatra-style-eyeliner2This style has had the green up arrow since the spring and appears to be picking up steam, thus becoming the exception to our Instagram rule. Obviously people have been working with black eyeliner since Cleopatra graced the halls, but what made cleopatra eyes 1the spring and summer black eyeliner iterations so different and special is that we see the makeup artist actually referencing the first wearers of liner by tracing the model’s eyes in dark black and stretching the cat eyes to the extreme.

bronze-eyeshadowWarmer Colors of Eye Shadows – These work better on lighter color eyes, particularly blue and green but hazel looks great as well. The theme here is lighter on the top and darker the closer you get to the eye. Pre-made eye shadow kits are a great way to get a great look in a fraction of the time. One of our favorites is the Eye Majic Instant Eye Shadow Kit ($29.99 USD). Purple eye shadow is a hot trend and helps in bringing out the beauty of eyes. Bronze eye shadows look very bold but help in balancing the eye tone of blue or green eyes. Lavender is a great shade for day use but in the evening you should go with more a deeper shade like plum. With light eyes you can always count on a beige eye shadow to brighten up your eyes. You really can’t go wrong choosing from those color pallets.

Bright Eye Shadow – Perhaps the hottest trend this summer has been in line with the season, bright eye shadow colors. I mean colors you haven’t seen since the tackiest days of the 80’s are back but the difference this time is not so much volume. Thin lines with bright colors, and compliment them with strong cheeks. If you are one to gauge impact by the red carpet then look no further than this year’s events in Hollywood. Margot Robbie, Priyanka Chopra, Nichole Richie, super model Emily Ratajkowski were among many that have been seen struttin’ this look.  The great part about this is you don’t have to spend a fortune to pull it off. Use a more pigmented yellow shade such as NYX’s Hot Singles Eyeshadow in STFU ($5; Target.com) on your lids, and sweep a sheer, slightly peach color like NYX’s Hot Singles Eyeshadow in LOL ($9; Macys.com) from your crease up to your brow bone for dimension. If you’re going to wear an unexpected color on your eyes, keep the rest of your makeup soft and minimal.
